State-of-the-art whole-brain MRSI with spatial-spectral encoding and multichannel acquisition generates huge amounts of data, which must be efficiently processed to stay within reasonable reconstruction times. Although coil combination significantly reduces the amount of data, currently it is performed in image space at the end of the reconstruction. This prolongs reconstruction times and increases RAM requirements. We propose an alternative k-space-based coil combination that uses geometric deep learning to combine MRSI data already in native non-Cartesian k-space.
Twelve volunteers were scanned at a 3T MR scanner with a 20-channel head coil at 10 different positions with water-unsuppressed MRSI. At the eleventh position, water-suppressed MRSI data were acquired. Data of 7 volunteers were used to estimate sensitivity maps and form a base for simulating training data. A neural network was designed and trained to remove the effect of sensitivity profiles of the coil elements from the MRSI data. The water-suppressed MRSI data of the remaining volunteers were used to evaluate the performance of the new k-space-based coil combination relative to that of a conventional image-based alternative.
For both approaches, the resulting metabolic ratio maps were similar. The SNR of the k-space-based approach was comparable to the conventional approach in low SNR regions, but underperformed for high SNR. The Cramér-Rao lower bounds show the same trend. The analysis of the FWHM showed no difference between the two methods.

Alterations in brain structure have been implicated in the onset and acute phases of several forms of psychopathology. However, there is a dearth of research investigating brain structure in persons with binge eating, contributing to poor understanding of mechanisms associated with binge eating.
Adolescent girls and women (aged 14-35 years) with binge eating (n=56) and group age-matched girls and women without binge eating (n=26) completed structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and interview-based and self-report assessments of eating disorder and general psychopathology. MRI data were processed using FreeSurfer. Analysis of covariance tested mean differences in subcortical volume and cortical thickness of a priori selected regions of interest between binge-eating and non-binge-eating groups, controlling for age, body mass index, purging frequency, depression, and medication use. Exploratory partial correlations tested associations between brain structure and eating disorder symptoms within paron or persists beyond binge eating cessation.
The aim of this randomized clinical trial was to compare ceramic and titanium implants with respect to the esthetic and clinical parameters, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).
Thirty patients received thirty implants (8-12mm in length, 3.3mm diameter, and a tissue level design) to replace single teeth in the anterior maxilla. Patients were randomly allocated to receive a ceramic or a titanium implant. Esthetic, clinical parameters, and PROMs were evaluated 18months after surgery.
At 12months post-final loading, there were no significant differences between groups with respect to esthetics. Mean Index Crown Aesthetic score was 6.31 (95% C.I. 4.59-8.04) and 6.07 (95% C.I. 4.21-7.93) for ceramic and titanium implants, respectively. selleck kinase inhibitor The pink esthetic score (PES) was 7.81 (95% C.I. 6.90-8.73) for ceramic implants and 7.86 (95% C.I. 7.11-8.60) for titanium implants, with no significant differences between groups. UV-visible spectra are very distinct in the heterometallic species while electrochemical studies demonstrate that these species, as compared to the homobimetallic analog, are much easier to oxidize. Combined Mössbauer, EPR, NMR, magnetic and UV-visible spectroscopic studies show that upon 2e-oxidation of the heterobimetallic complexes only ring-centered oxidation occurs. The energy differences between HOMO and LUMO are linearly dependent with the low-energy NIR band obtained for the 2e-oxidized complexes. Also, strong electronic communication between two porphyrin rings through the bridge facilitates coupling between various unpaired spins present while the coupling model depends on the nature of metal ions used. While unpaired spins of Fe(III) and the porphyrin π-cation radical are strongly antiferromagnetically coupled, such coupling is rather weak between Mn(III) and a porphyrin π-cation radical. Moreover, the coupling between two π-cation radicals are much stronger in the 2e-oxidized complexes of dimanganese(III) and copper(II)-manganese(III) porphyrin dimers as compared to their diiron(III) and copper(II)-iron(III) analogs. We examined whether African elephants (Loxodonta africana), black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis), and southern giraffe (Giraffa giraffa) modulate insectivorous bat communities around permanent waterholes in the Namib Desert. We estimated megaherbivore use of sites based on dung transects, summarized vegetation productivity from satellite measurements of the normalized difference vegetation index, and surveyed local bat communities acoustically. We used structural equation models to identify relationships among megaherbivores and bat species richness and dry- (November 2016-January 2017) and wet- (February-May 2017) season bat activity. Site-level megaherbivore use in the dry season was positively associated with bat activity-particularly that of open-air foragers-and species richness through indirect pathways. When resources were more abundant (wet season), however, these relationships were weakened. Our results indicate that biotic interactions contribute to species distributions in desert areas and suggest the conservation of megaherbivores in this ecosystem may indirectly benefit insectivorous bat abundance and diversity. Herein, we report a novel alternatively spliced TREM2 isoform without exon 2 (Δe2), which constitutes a sizable fraction of TREM2 transcripts and has highly variable inter-individual expression in the human brain (average frequency 10%; range 3.7-35%). The protein encoded by Δe2 lacks a V-set immunoglobulin domain from its extracellular part but retains its transmembrane and cytoplasmic domains. We demonstrated Δe2 protein expression in TREM2-positive THP-1 cells, in which the expression of full-length transcript was precluded by CRISPR/Cas9 disruption of the exon 2 coding frame. Similar to the full-length TREM2, Δe2 is sorted to the plasma membrane and is subject to receptor shedding. In „add-back“ experiments, Δe2 TREM2 had diminished capacity to restore phagocytosis of amyloid beta peptide and promote IFN-I response as compared to full-length TREM2. Our findings suggest that changes in the balance of two mutually exclusive TREM2 isoforms may modify the dosage of full-length transcript potentially weakening some TREM2 receptor functions in the human brain.
