Age-related changes in physiological, metabolic and medication profiles make alcohol consumption likely to be more harmful among older than younger adults. This study aimed to estimate cross-national variation in the quantity and patterns of drinking throughout older age, and to investigate country-level variables explaining cross-national variation in consumption for individuals aged 50years and older.

The objective of this study was to compare the impact of psoriatic disease (psoriatic arthritis [PsA] and psoriasis) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on objective and subjective parameters of hand function.
Hand function was determined in this cross-sectional study by 1) vigorimetric grip strength, 2) the Moberg Picking-Up Test used for assessing fine-motor skills, and 3) self-reported hand function (Michigan Hand Questionnaire). Mixed-effects linear regression models were used to test the relation of hand function with disease group, age, and sex.
Two hundred ninety-nine subjects were tested, 101 with RA, 92 with PsA, and 106 nonarthritic controls (51 with psoriasis and 55 healthy controls [HCs]). Regression analysis showed that hand function was influenced by age, sex, disease group, and hand dominance (P < 0.001 for all). The impact of PsA and RA on hand function was comparable and generally more pronounced in women. Both PsA and RA led to significantly enhanced age-related loss of grip strength, fine-motor skills, and self-reported hand function in patients with PsA and RA compared with HCs. In addition, patients with psoriasis showed significant impairment of hand function compared with HCs.
RA and PsA have a comparable impact on the decline of strength, fine-motor skills, and self-reported function of the hand. Unexpectedly, patients with psoriasis also show impaired hand function that follows a similar pattern as observed in patients with PsA.

The aim of this study is to describe 4 of the most common autoantibodies against components of the Th/To complex human POP1 (hPOP1), RPP25, RPP30, and RPP40. We report their prevalence and clinical characteristics in a systemic sclerosis (SSc) population, and determine whether these specificities are associated with cancer.
A case-control study was performed using data from the Johns Hopkins Scleroderma Center Cohort. A total of 804 adult patients with SSc were included; 401 SSc patients with no history of cancer after at least 5 years of disease were compared to 403 SSc patients who ever had a history of cancer. Antibodies against hPOP1, RPP25, RPP30, and RPP40 were assayed by immunoprecipitation of
S-methionine-labeled proteins generated by in vitro transcription/translation. Demographic and clinical characteristics were compared between groups.
Of 804 patients, 67 (8.3%) had antibodies against any component of the Th/To complex. Patients with antibodies to any component were significantly more likely to have limited cutaneous disease, less likely to have tendon friction rubs, and more likely to have findings consistent with interstitial lung disease or pulmonary hypertension. Patients with antibodies against hPOP1, RPP25, RPP30, and/or RPP40 were significantly less likely to develop cancer within 2 years of SSc onset (0% versus 11% of antibody-negative patients; P = 0.009).
SSc patients who produce autoantibodies to components of the Th/To complex have a clinical phenotype characterized by limited cutaneous disease and pulmonary involvement. Our findings show that the presence of any Th/To autoantibody may have a protective effect against contemporaneous cancer.

The hollow nanocage structures obviously improve surface areas; moreover, the Zr doping forms the Co3-x Zrx O4 solid-solution supports, and the corresponding yPt/Co3-x Zrx O4 catalysts promote the enhancement of catalytic performance. Catalytic activity toward toluene combustion is enhanced for the 2.0 wt% Pt/Co2.73 Zr0.27 O4 catalyst. The catalysts are characterized using multiple techniques. Pt nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed across the Co2.73 Zr0.27 O4 nanocage surface. The 2.0 wt% Pt/Co2.73 Zr0.27 O4 catalyst exhibits the highest catalytic activity among all the samples and demonstrates good stability, with 90% toluene conversion obtained at a temperature of 165 °C. The same catalyst accomplishes full toluene oxidation at 180 °C, at a weight hourly space velocity of 36 000 mL h-1 g-1 . The apparent activation energy (Ea ) over the yPt/Co2.73 Zr0.27 O4 samples are significantly lower than those over the Co3-x Zrx O4 supports, with the 2.0 wt% Pt/Co2.73 Zr0.27 O4 catalyst exhibiting the lowest Ea value. These findings demonstrate the potential of the 2.0 wt% Pt/Co2.73 Zr0.27 O4 catalyst as a promising catalyst toward atmospheric toluene removal.Mental health professionals frequently work in environments where stressful, unpredictable, and potentially volatile situations can arise. Staff responses to these, often violent events, can be severe and enduring. Psychological first aid provided by a colleague following exposure to such violence is gaining increasing acceptance as a means of assisting affected individuals. However, there has been little attention to how staff perceive this support. In this study, interviews were conducted with 13 staff employed in a secure facility and thematically analysed using content analysis. Four content themes emerged responding to emotional distress, empowering staff through practical support, the good provider, and resilience. The results indicate that staff value and benefit from receiving support from peers following exposure to occupational violence. Most would access peer support again and would consider recommending it to others. A small number choose not to engage with the programme and the reasons for this are also discussed. This type of peer support could be applied in other high-risk workplaces as a key element of an integrated and comprehensive workplace violence prevention and management strategy.In this focused progress review, the recent developments and trends of hydrogel-forming microneedles (HFMs) and potential future directions are presented. Poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (P4HB) is a commonly used PHA that was explored in this study as an absorbable biomaterial for several medical applications, including controlled drug delivery. Currently, P4HB is melt spun and drawn into filaments at high processing temperatures (~200°C), precluding the incorporation of thermally sensitive drugs within the polymer during melt spinning. Post-spinning drug incorporation can potentially cause nonuniform drug absorption that leads to an uneven release profile. This raises the need for a low temperature spinning process for these polymers. Until now, there has been no defined procedure to produce P4HB fibers through a low temperature solution spinning process. This study focuses on determining suitable wet spinning conditions to form continuous P4HB fibers. After several preliminary tests, it was found that a chloroform-based spin dope with 10-15% polymer concentration facilitated the extrusion of continuous stretchable fibers into a coagulation bath containing reagent alcohol. Subsequently, several P4HB fibers were spun with various spin dope concentrations, coagulation bath temperatures, and spin draw ratios to assess their effect on fiber structure and properties.Deictic pointing is among the most impaired gestures in children with autism. Research on typical development demonstrates that contact with the referent and handshape when pointing, are associated with different communicative intentions and developmental stages. Despite their importance, the morphological features of pointing remain largely unexplored in autism. The aim of the present study was to map out pointing production in autism with a focus on handshape and contact with the referent. Participants (age range = 1-6 years old) with ASD (n = 16), at high risk for autism (n = 13) and typically developing children (n = 18) interacted with their caregivers in a gesture elicitation task. Results showed that children with ASD produced fewer pointing gestures overall and fewer index finger pointing without contact with the referent compared to the typically developing children. LAY SUMMARY Children with autism produce less gestures than typical children, and pointing gestures appear to be more affected than other gesture types. Whether children point using their index finger or the palm, and whether they touch or not the referent is crucial for understanding communicative intentions. This is the first study to document experimentally exactly how pointing gestures differ in autism in comparison to typical development. We found important qualitative differences in the communicative patterns of children with autism and at risk for autism, that may serve to identify potential new markers for early diagnosis.
