Flag Hinges

UPVC hinges are available to replace or upgrade hinges currently in use. A lot of the latest uPVC door models come with adjustable slimline hinges. They are much easier to open and shut and more heat resistant. These hinges require less maintenance and are less susceptible than older hinges to draught. However, like all hinges they are still susceptible to wear out and require adjustment.

You can adjust a butt type hinge by loosening the grub screw in the middle of the hinge (face-on). You can then turn the top or bottom adjustment screws to allow for sideways movement. You can repair the hinge of a flag using wood glue, wood filler or epoxy to plug any gaps in the hinge. After the filler has dried, sand it smooth and then paint the area. Contact a hardware store for advice if you are unsure of the type of filler you need to apply. You can also choose fillers with a higher gloss to give the door a polished look. You can also cover the gap with wood. This option is a little more expensive, but it can make the door look like new.

Recess Hinges

Using a chisel, cut an indentation on the outside of the door frame to be the same size as the hinge you’re installing. Once you’ve made your cut, you will have to scrape the wood and clean the area with a moist cloth. This will ensure that the new hinge is perfectly against the surface.

Install your new hinges after cleaning the area. Test the door to confirm that it functions. Simply place the level on the top of the door and if there are differences in height between the frame and the door, this is an indication that the hinges require to be adjusted.
